Trump honors ‘Latinos’ who saved lives during the El Paso shooting

President Donald Trump honored several Latinos who saved lives during the shooting in El Paso,Texas last month, and defined that event as a “racist attack motivated by evil”.

In an event at the White House, Trump awarded the Medal of Valor to six Dayton,Ohio police officers where a shooting killed 9 people in early August; and two certificates of recognition to five civilians for their performance in the massacre of El Paso, where 22 people died the same weekend.

Among the civilians honored at the White House was Gilbert Serna, a Walmart employee where the El Paso shooting occurred, which was at the rear of the establishment when he heard a “brown code” on his radio, which indicated that someone was shooting.

Trump also recognized the valor of Marisela Luna, who was in charge of the McDonald’s located inside Walmart and, upon learning of the shooting, “quickly scouted customers and directed them to refrigerators and other places where they could hide,” the president explained during the ceremony.

Another honoree was Angelica Silva, a McDonald’s supervisor who was outside at the time of the shooting but, upon learning of it, “drove to the spot and saw two people who were seriously injured” in the Walmart parking lot, Trump said.

Silva warned the emergency teams “and helped save one’s life” from the injured, Trump said.

In addition, he congratulated Robert Evans, a Walmart manager who guided people to emergency exits; and Chris Grant, a client who, in order to save others, decided to throw objects at the person responsible for the shooting to distract him and focus his attention on him.

“Grant suffered two very serious gunshot wounds and is recovering,” said Trump, who handed his certificate to his mother.

“A month ago, the United States witnessed an incredible horror,” said the president, recalling the shootings in El Paso and Dayton.

Trump described the author of the shooting in El Paso as “an intolerant and soulless monster,” and said about the killing: “It was a racist attack motivated by pure evil and hate.”
