An increasing number of Pennsylvania voters are shifting their political affiliation from Democrat to Republican, which may serve as a cautionary signal for President Joe Biden.
Based on the latest voter registration data from the Pennsylvania Department of State, as of December 18, 2023, a significant number of registered Democrats have decided to switch their party affiliation to Republican. In contrast, 15,622 registered Republicans have chosen to align themselves with the Democratic party. In addition, there are now 20,908 individuals who were previously affiliated with the Democratic party and 18,927 individuals who were previously affiliated with the Republican party who have chosen not to align themselves with any political party.
The decrease of 19,967 Democrats is concerning for Biden, considering his narrow victory in Pennsylvania by approximately 80,000 votes in the 2020 election.
“The voter registration and polling trends in Pennsylvania are a cause for concern for President Biden and Democrats at both the state and national level,” cautioned Erik Telford, the senior vice president of public affairs at the Commonwealth Foundation, in an interview with Newsweek.
According to a recent poll conducted by the Commonwealth Foundation, Biden’s approval ratings among Pennsylvania voters have consistently remained in negative territory throughout 2023. In fact, his disapproval rating has reached its highest level this year, standing at 61 percent according to the foundation’s tracker. Despite the notable disparity in approval ratings between Democrats and Republicans, with 72 percent and 9 percent respectively, Biden’s overall approval falls below the national average.
Regarding the 2024 election, it is worth noting that although 46 percent of respondents expressed their intention to vote for Biden, there is a segment of 15 percent of Democrats who have made it clear that they will not support him in the general election. In a recent poll conducted by Emerson College, it was found that a significant majority of Pennsylvania Democrats would support Biden in a potential 2024 race against former President Donald Trump. However, a small percentage would still vote for Trump, while a portion of the respondents remain undecided.
Given its significant number of votes in the Electoral College, Pennsylvania holds immense importance in the outcome of the presidential election. Throughout the years from 1932 to 1988, there were only two instances where a presidential candidate managed to secure the White House without winning Pennsylvania. It is worth noting that since 1948, no Democrat has been able to claim the presidency without winning the state.
Trump has surpassed Biden in several recent polls. A new one out this month shows that the ex-president is leading in a number of crucial swing states—including Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin—that are essential to achieving 270 electoral votes.
Americans have a choice. They are free to re-elect Donald Trump and hand over permanent governance to him and the GOP. It is their choice to make and their choice to live with. They can choose to have their economy isolated from the rest of the world by tariff barriers, they can choose to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants forcibly, they can choose to embrace Putin’s Russia as an ally and leave NATO, they can build a wall on the Mexican border and another on the Canadian Border, they can ban all Muslims from entering the U.S. and strip any U.S. Citizen of Palestinian descent of their citizenship and expel them. They can declare the U.S. a “Christian” state and declare abortion and those who abet it a felony and impose the death penalty for homosexuality as has been done in Uganda. They can choose to have education become an instrument of political indoctrination and criminalize whatever they deem to be “woke” ideas. They can burn all the books, oil and natural gas they want, open up parkland and national reserves to oil and gas drilling as well as strip mining. They can have all this and more. It is their right to choose.
