The U.S. House of Representatives did not succeed in impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. This outcome represents a significant loss for the Republicans’ effort to impeach a Cabinet secretary in the Biden administration.
A total of 214 Democrats and four Republicans cast their votes against the two articles of impeachment, resulting in a final tally of 214-216.
The Republican legislators who cast their votes against the impeachment were Representatives Ken Buck of Colorado, Tom McClintock of California, Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, and Blake Moore of Utah.
The House GOP pointed fingers at Mayorkas for an increase in illegal border crossings
Republicans had been advocating for weeks to impeach Mayorkas, asserting that he had contravened immigration enforcement laws. Democrats criticized the atypical action as politically motivated in anticipation of the November elections.
The chair of the Homeland Security Committee, Mark Green of Tennessee, who has overseen impeachment efforts, stated that Secretary Mayorkas has unequivocally declined to adhere to the law. “If your noncompliance with the law results in the demise of your fellow citizens, you are no longer entitled to retain your employment.”
Green frequently holds Mayorkas responsible for the fatalities caused by fentanyl opioids that are illicitly transported through the southern border, attributing blame to him.
Republicans have accused Mayorkas of neglecting immigration law enforcement and breaching public confidence.
Democrats contended that the Republican criticisms fell short of meeting the constitutional threshold for impeachment, instead constituting complaints about the Biden administration’s policies regarding the southern border.
In an official statement, the White House expressed its opposition to the resolution, which was initially proposed by Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican representative from Georgia.
The White House stated that impeaching Secretary Mayorkas would be an unprecedented and unconstitutional act of political retribution that would not address the challenges our Nation faces in securing the border.
