The Doral police officer who last year arrested a man who burst into the Trump National Doral Miami was recognized on Wednesday by the municipal authorities for his courageous actions in wounding and neutralizing the armed man and rewarded by a Private company with one vehicle of the year.
Sergeant Luis Celis, with 11 years of police experience in Doral, was excited to receive the keys to the truck donated by Toyota of North Miami and emphasized his commitment to continue working hard in the Doral Police Department to ensure the safety of the community.
Early on May 18, 2018, the Doral police received several calls that alerted an armed man who was firing in the lobby of the Trump Resort. Five officers, including Sergeant Celis, came to the scene and saw the armed man who started firing at the policemen.
Here is the video released by the Doral Police department.
The agents separated and deployed to various locations in the Trump resort. Suddenly the subject shot Celis and he responded and wounded the attacker, shortly after he was arrested. The attacker was identified by Doral police as Jonathan Oddi, 43 years old.
The suspect also wore an American flag on his shoulders and shouted comments against President Trump, said Juan Perez, head of the county police department.
According to the police, Oddi initially fired at the ceiling and into the air, and then at Doral and Miami-Dade police officers when they arrived in the lobby. Afterwards, Oddi ran up the stairs, but was shot in the legs.
Oddi was helped by Miami Dade rescuers who arrived on the scene and transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for gunshot wounds. Oddi was detained in the Corrections Department, Doral police spokesman Rey Valdés said.
“We are very proud of the temperament and discipline that Celis showed,” said Valdés. “This inspires confidence that our officers are prepared to act in sensitive situations like this.”
