Sen. Marco Rubio made his preference clear on Sunday by endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential campaign instead of Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“When Trump was in WH I achieved major policies I had worked on for years (like expanded Child Tax Credit & tough sanctions on regime in Cuba & Venezuela) because we had a President who didn’t cave to special interests or let bureaucrats block us,,” Rubio shared on the social media platform X.
““I support Trump because that kind of leadership is the ONLY way we will get the extraordinary actions needed to fix the disaster Biden has created. It’s time to get on with the work of beating Biden & saving America!”
Rubio’s endorsement, arriving just before the Iowa caucuses, highlights Trump’s strengths and DeSantis’ weaknesses. Despite DeSantis’ efforts in Iowa, recent polling shows him falling to third place.
Trump has garnered support from a majority of Florida’s congressional delegation, consistently leading DeSantis in all polls conducted in early states, including Florida and the nation as a whole.
Similar to DeSantis at present, Rubio also competed against Trump in the 2016 presidential race and faced a resounding defeat from the political newcomer. Trump ultimately emerged victorious and formed a partnership with Florida’s seasoned senator. Rubio’s campaign against Trump was quite spirited, with some playful jabs and even a veiled reference to a certain physical attribute.
Rubio’s campaign didn’t exactly go as planned. He ended up losing in 66 out of 67 counties in Florida to Trump, which ultimately led to him dropping out of the race.
Despite the bruising campaign, Rubio’s electability remained intact. He made the bold choice to run for reelection that year and managed to secure a larger victory in Florida compared to Trump.
