Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has decided to suspend his Republican presidential campaign and throw his support behind Donald Trump.
DeSantis withdrew from the race mere days before New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary on Tuesday, putting an end to his White House aspirations that fell short of the anticipated challenge to the former US president.
“Seems like a lot of Republican primary voters are eager to give Donald Trump another shot,” he quipped in a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The video was accompanied by a clever caption, featuring a quote from Winston Churchill: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
DeSantis playfully poked fun at former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who has been his closest competitor for second place in the primary race. He expressed his belief that Republicans should not revert to the outdated ways of the past, which he believes Haley symbolizes with her recycled form of corporate influence.
The enterprising governor of a large state threw his hat into the ring for the 2024 presidential race, armed with significant advantages in his mission to challenge Trump. Early primary polls indicated that DeSantis was well-positioned to accomplish just that.
With a political fortune well over $100 million, he and his allies have certainly made their mark. Their significant legislative record on issues such as abortion and the teaching of race and gender issues in schools has resonated with many conservatives.
Despite his confident promises of victory, he suffered a resounding defeat in the Iowa caucuses, losing to Trump by a staggering 30 percentage points.
DeSantis’ political future has become uncertain as he decided to suspend his presidential campaign after only one voting contest. The 45-year-old has reached the end of their term as Florida governor.
DeSantis was thought to be a formidable contender against Trump. Recognizing the danger, Trump relentlessly targeted the Florida governor in the months leading up to DeSantis’ May announcement. He continued to criticize him on the campaign trail, through social media, and in paid advertising in the subsequent months.
The promising benefits were short-lived in the harsh realm of presidential politics in 2024. DeSantis faced a series of challenges, including a high-profile announcement marred by technical glitches and frequent changes to his staff and campaign strategy. Finding his footing in the primary proved to be a struggle.
