With spring break just around the corner, Miami Beach commisioners have convened to plan and execute strategies to reduce disorder and increase security throughout the city, especially in the trendy South Beach area.
Meeting attendees on Wednesday discussed various ways to make Miami Beach safer in anticipation of March. A spring break curfew, stricter enforcement of traffic violations, more DUI checkpoints, and weekend nighttime alcohol sales were among the topics covered by commissioners.
Officials from the city of Miami Beach have stated that the disorderly behavior seen on South Beach in previous years, which has been witnessed by many, does not belong here.
During the commissioner meeting, leaders proposed various methods for controlling traffic, such as the use of ferries and helicopters.
Making South Beach a safer place for everyone is the top priority for the city’s leaders.
During his speech at the Florida Sheriffs Association Conference on Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recognized the past difficulties that Miami Beach has encountered during spring break. He lent his voice to the chorus of voices calling for local authorities to keep the peace over spring break.
“We’ve seen some of the things that have happened in Miami Beach. We have resources available. We want to work proactively with the local jurisdictions,” Gov. DeSantis made the comment that “Spring break is what it is, but it should not be impeding the functioning of businesses in the area. It should not be impacting the quality of life of our residents. So, you have our support at the state level to do what you need to do to make sure the quality of life of your residents are maintained and order in the streets is maintained and businesses are able to function appropriately like they should.”
Three in 2023 and eight in 2022 are among the 22 shootings that have occurred during spring break in Miami Beach in the previous five years, according to statistics. In order to make sure they are doing everything right, commissioners met with police chiefs on Wednesday.
The safety measures are expected to be finalized at a meeting of the city commissioners that is scheduled for the end of February.
