Most 2020 Joe Biden voters would support him dropping out of the 2024 White House race, according to a new poll exclusively conducted for Newsweek.
Out of 1,500 eligible U.S. voters surveyed by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, 54% of 2020 Biden voters would like him to drop out of the 2024 race, while only 21% would strongly disagree. Among those who voted for Democrats in 2020, the likelihood of Biden stepping down is higher than among the general population, where 45% are in favor of the sitting president stepping down and 30% are against. On March 2nd, an online poll was run.
As Biden, 81 years old, prepares to face Donald Trump, 77 years old, in November, his detractors on the Republican side have been harping on his advancing years and cognitive abilities. ‘Super Tuesday’ saw a brace of victories for Biden and Trump, effectively ending the presidential campaigns for their respective parties. In an email sent on Saturday, Newsweek contacted the White House press office as well as a representative from Joe Biden’s presidential campaign for 2024. So long as one of them decides to weigh in, this piece will remain unchanged.
Newsweek polled its readers to find out their thoughts on “support or oppose Joe Biden ending his campaign to seek the Democratic nomination for the 2024 U.S. presidential election.” An additional 29% of Biden’s 2020 election voters indicated they would “support” or “strongly support” his resignation this year, while 25% stated the same. In comparison, 9% were “opposed” and 12% were “strongly opposed.”
A further 21% of 2020 Biden supporters stated they would “neither support nor oppose” the independent running unopposed this year, and 4% responded with “don’t know.” General public opinion on Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race was as follows: 24% would “strongly support” his withdrawal, with another 21% expressing “support.” On the other hand, 9% expressed opposition, 21% were actively opposed, 18% were unsure, and 7% were neither supporters nor opponents.
Among Trump 2020 voters, 27% would “strongly support” Biden resigning this year, while 15% would answer “support.” The corresponding percentages for those who would “oppose” and “strongly oppose” this were 32% and 10%, respectively. Some 2020 Trump supporters may want Biden to remain in the 2024 race despite his obvious loss, according to the high “strongly oppose” number.
