CBP reports 160 agents infected with COVID-19 in the United States

The Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) reported Monday that 160 of its agents have been infected with the virus that causes the disease COVID-19 nationwide.

In the information published on the CBP website dedicated to the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal agency did not break down how many of these agents are from customs and how many of them belong to the Border Patrol.

According to the information, the state where the most cases have been registered is New York, where 59 cases were reported as of Sunday, of which 52 were only in New York City. New York is considered the epicenter of the COVID-19 epidemic in the United States.

Regarding the border with Mexico, the state where the highest number of cases is reported is Texas with 19, 7 of them in Laredo, 4 in El Paso, 3 in Houston, 2 in the Río Grande, 2 in San Antonio and one more in Brownsville.

In California, 16 cases are reported, 10 of them in Los Angeles and 6 in El Centro; 6 cases are recorded in Arizona, 3 of them in Nogales and 3 in Tucson, and in New Mexico no case has been reported.

Other states such as Florida, CBP reports 20 officers infected with COVID-19, 17 of them in Miami and 3 in Fort Lauderdale.

CBP is the agency in charge of safeguarding the airports, maritime and land ports of entry in the United States.

The agency has yet to release information on how many undocumented immigrants detained at the Mexican border have tested positive for the coronavirus.

For its part, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) reported that to date, 13 cases of immigrants infected with COVID-19 have been reported and are in the custody of this federal agency.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump ‘s administration has implemented an express deportation system on the border with Mexico.

Immigrants who are arrested by the Border Patrol are quickly processed and returned to Mexican territory.
