The coronavirus pandemic shows no signs of slowing down in the United States, where the number of infections reached 309,000 cases this Saturday, while deaths reached 8,405, according to the latest CDC data.

Despite the fact that President Donald Trump had assured that the peak would arrive for this week, this Saturday he stated that the worst is yet to come in the next two weeks and warned that the country will record a high number of deaths due to COVID-19.

“This will probably be the hardest week, between this week and next week. There will be many deaths, unfortunately,” Trump said Saturday at a press conference at the White House.

For his part, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading medical expert in the face of the pandemic in the United States, said that he is confident that there will be a change in the curve as everyone is doing “some degree of physical separation” and social distancing.

New York remains the main epicenter of the outbreak in the country, with 3,565 deaths from COVID-19 and 113,704 cases.

The other states most affected by the pandemic are New Jersey, with 34,124 cases and 846 deaths; Washington, with 6,966 cases and 284 deaths; and California, with 12,540 cases and 281 deaths, according to Saturday’s figures.

New York will receive more than 1,100 respirators from China and Oregon, said state Governor Andrew Cuomo said Saturday. The Chinese government and billionaires Jack Ma and Joseph Tsai, co-founders of the Alibaba online marketplace, facilitated a donation of 1,000 respirators due to arrive in the afternoon. The state of Oregon offered to send another 140 respirators.

Governors across the United States plead, compete, and scour the global market for respirators and other items needed to treat the sick.
