MIAMI – The Miami Dade County Commission recognized the city of Jerusalem as “the true historic capital of the State of Israel” during today’s plenary session.

“This congressional legislative body has a long history of supporting the State of Israel, supporting the strengthening of the alliance between the United States and Israel, promoting the values that both countries share and combating discriminatory policies against the Jewish country,” said the commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., when proposing the resolution.

The State of Israel was founded in 1948 “with the purpose of providing protection to the Jewish people and the city of Jerusalem was declared capital some time later,” the commissioner said.

“I thank my colleagues for the approval of this resolution that recognizes Jerusalem as the true capital of Israel,” said Commissioner Bovo, who was accompanied by Israel’s consul general for Florida and Puerto Rico, Lior Haiat, and the mayor of Miami-Dade, Carlos Giménez, coinciding with the 71st. anniversary of the independence of the Hebrew country.

The United States thus becomes the only country in the world that recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, where no nation has its embassy because, after the Israeli annexation of the eastern part of the city in 1980, the UN called on the International community to withdraw its representative offices from the Holy City.

In fact, the official headquarters of the United States Embassy in Israel was moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May 2018, after President Donald Trump announced that the US diplomatic mission “should be in the capital” of the Hebrew country, precisely on the east side of the city that is not part of the disputed area.
