Florida lawmakers seek Epstein grand jury evidence release

A report states that some Florida Lawmakers are attempting to have sealed the secret evidence that was given to a grand jury almost twenty years ago, which led to a plea bargain in the prosecution of multimillionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

As part of an effort to convince the courts to unseal evidence that was presented to a grand jury in 2006 that charged the serial pedophile with only one count of solicitation of a prostitute, two lawmakers who attempted to introduce legislation to eliminate the secrecy provision of grand juries last year but were unsuccessful in doing so have renewed their push to change the law this month.

In the course of the proceedings before the grand jury in Palm Beach County, Epstein, who is politically connected, was charged for the very first time in connection with the sex trafficking of young girls and women. As a result, Epstein was able to continue to abuse his victims without facing serious criminal liabilities, as reported by the Miami Herald. The charge, however, was a mere slap on the wrist.

Earlier this month, during a hearing of the Criminal Justice Subcommittee, Representative Peggy Gossett-Seidman stated that “the public and victims need to know if the prosecutors steered the jury correctly or away from indicting Epstein on more severe charges.” She was presenting the legislation at the time. The state of Florida has the opportunity to complete the story by adding the missing chapters.

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida granted Epstein permission to enter into a plea bargain, which ultimately resulted in him being sentenced to thirteen months in prison. He participated in a work-release program and spent a significant portion of that time at his office and mansion in West Palm Beach.

In July of 2019, Epstein was taken into custody on charges of sex trafficking at the federal level. Exactly one month later, he took his own life while incarcerated in Manhattan.

Tina Polsky, a Democratic senator from Florida, has also demanded that the evidence from the grand jury that was selected in 2006 be made public. The Florida legislation includes a companion bill that she has sponsored in the Florida Senate.
