President Donald Trump shook up New York’s already chaotic mayoral race Monday with a fiery endorsement of former Governor Andrew Cuomo—and a direct threat to withhold federal funding if far-left candidate Zohran Mamdani captures City Hall.
In a Truth Social post that sent shockwaves through both parties, Trump blasted Mamdani as a “Communist” who would turn New York into a “total economic and social disaster.”
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds—other than the bare minimum required—to my beloved first home,” Trump wrote. “With a Communist at the helm, this once-great city has zero chance of survival.”
The President’s post effectively positioned him as the kingmaker in the nation’s most-watched mayoral race, urging voters to “do the right thing” and back Cuomo—even if they dislike him.
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” Trump said. “You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable. Mamdani is not.”
🔥 Trump Draws a Hard Line
The former president accused Mamdani—who has called himself a “democratic socialist”—of plotting to drag New York deeper into chaos through radical policies and anti-business rhetoric.
He warned that he won’t “send good money after bad” if Mamdani takes over, a veiled threat that federal aid to the city could be cut off.
Trump also threw shade at Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, saying “a vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani.”
🗽 Mamdani Fires Back
Speaking in the Bronx, Mamdani dismissed Trump’s remarks as proof of a “billionaire panic.”
“The MAGA movement’s embrace of Andrew Cuomo shows exactly who he’ll serve—Donald Trump, not New Yorkers,” Mamdani said.
He also accused the former governor of being “Trump’s puppet,” funded by “the same billionaire donors who bought Trump’s second term.”
Mamdani’s campaign has leaned heavily on socialist language, promising to “redistribute power” and “end corporate control” of the city—positions that have alarmed moderate Democrats and independents alike.
💰 The Cuomo Factor
Cuomo, seeking a political comeback after years of scandal, has tried to walk a fine line—accepting Trump’s endorsement without alienating the city’s left-leaning base. But with Trump’s warning about cutting federal aid looming large, even disillusioned moderates might see Cuomo as the lesser of two evils.
As Election Day nears, New Yorkers face a stark choice: a pragmatic comeback or a hard-left experiment that could leave the nation’s biggest city broke.
