President Donald Trump said early on Monday that Mexico is doing more to stop illegal immigration than members of the Democratic Party, who want open borders, which means the entry of drugs and crime to the US.
Through a series of messages posted on his official Twitter account, the president said that the agreement with the Aztec country is making more important advances than the measures taken by the Democrats, who want an open border policy.
“Now with our new deal, Mexico is doing more for the USA on Illegal Immigration than the Democrats. In fact, the Democrats are doing NOTHING, they want Open Borders, which means Illegal Immigration, Drugs, and Crime,” the President wrote in a tweet in the morning hours.
“We do not anticipate a problem with the vote but, if for some reason the approval does not arrive, the rates will be restored,” he said in another tweet, referring to the agreement between both countries to avoid the imposition of new tariffs, although he did not completely rule out the possibility of applying them.
Trump’s comments come after the US threat to impose tariffs on Mexico on Friday was temporarily canceled after reaching an agreement to try to stop the illegal immigration that crosses the Aztec country in order to reach the southern border.
The situation began when Trump threatened tariffs of 5% on all Mexican products, which would increase every month until reaching a maximum of 25% for the month of October if Mexico did not commit to stop the migration across its border.
The president has fought against illegal immigration since before taking office in the White House. His main campaign promise was based on the construction of a border wall, by which he declared a state of national emergency to achieve the necessary budget.
