Negotiators Reach Agreement in Principle to Avoid Shutdown

The negotiators of the Senate and House of Representatives reported Monday night that they reached an agreement in principle to finance the government and avoid a new partial government shutdown.

After a closed-door meeting at the Capitol, Republican Senators Richard Shelby and Kay Granger and Democrats Nita Lowey and Patrick Leahy announced the agreement.

“We had a good afternoon, we have reached an agreement in principle,” Shelby said.

The negotiators refused to discuss the details of the deal, but Lowey’s team would be finalizing the details and the Democrats expect the legislation to be ready by Wednesday.

“I think everyone is going to say good work,” Granger added.

According to the AP, the Democrats asked to limit immigration detention at the border by federal authorities.

President Donald Trump agreed on January 25 to end a 35-day partial government shutdown, the longest in the country’s history, without obtaining the 5.7 billion dollars he had demanded from Congress for a wall at along the border with Mexico.

The negotiators have to reach a final agreement until Friday, February 15. This new agreement needs to be approved by the leadership of both houses of Congress and signed by President Trump. The negotiators indicated that they contacted directly the representatives of the White House and with the leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
