MIAMI — Four people were hospitalized Monday morning after a massive piling rig toppled at a construction site in Brickell, crushing vehicles, trapping workers and sparking a fire along one of Miami’s busiest corridors.
The collapse occurred shortly after 8 a.m. near Brickell Bay Drive and Southeast 12th Street, according to authorities.
Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia said the incident involved a piling rig — heavy construction equipment resembling a crane that is used to drive structural supports deep into the ground.
The rig fell onto multiple vehicles and a construction storage container with two workers inside, creating what emergency officials described as a complex rescue operation.
Despite the dramatic scene, authorities reported no fatalities.
Driver escapes moments before impact
One of the closest calls involved a woman driving south on Brickell Bay Drive as the rig began falling toward the roadway.
According to Hevia, the driver saw the equipment tipping and managed to reverse her vehicle far enough to escape.
The rig subsequently landed on the front of her white BMW SUV, and the vehicle caught fire.
She was able to get out and was later transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as emergency crews converged on the construction site and firefighters worked to extinguish the burning vehicle.
Two workers trapped inside container
The falling rig also struck a large metal construction container with two workers inside.
Firefighters had to cut through the damaged container to free the trapped men while other emergency personnel simultaneously battled the vehicle fire.
Local authorities identified the trapped workers as men ages 27 and 29.
The piling-rig operator, a 47-year-old man, managed to jump from the equipment as it began tipping.
The three workers were transported to a trauma center with injuries authorities described as minor.
All 18 construction workers at the site were accounted for following the collapse.
Brickell Bay Drive closed
The incident forced authorities to shut down Brickell Bay Drive between Southeast 12th Street and Southeast 13th Street while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Police urged motorists to avoid the area, use alternate routes and expect delays.
Images from the scene showed the massive construction equipment extending across the roadway, damaged vehicles and emergency personnel surrounding the site.
The collapse occurred in the heart of Brickell, where high-rise residential and commercial construction has transformed Miami’s financial district and placed large construction projects alongside heavily traveled streets.
Cause remains under investigation
Authorities had not determined what caused the piling rig to topple as of Monday afternoon.
Officials have not publicly indicated whether mechanical failure, ground conditions, construction procedures or another factor contributed to the collapse.
The investigation is continuing.
The distinction between a piling rig and a conventional tower crane could become important as investigators examine the accident. Piling rigs are used during foundation work to install deep structural supports before major vertical construction proceeds.
Monday’s incident nevertheless was initially described by police and widely reported as a crane collapse because of the equipment’s crane-like appearance.
Despite the extensive damage visible at the scene, Hevia said the fact that all four injured people survived with relatively minor injuries was remarkable.
