Florida Sheriff to New Yorkers After Mamdani’s Win: “It Can Be the Beginning of a New Life”

While New York City celebrates its first openly socialist mayor, many residents are wondering whether it’s time to head south. Florida’s Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood says the Sunshine State is ready to welcome them with open arms.

“To all New Yorkers,” Chitwood wrote on Facebook, “if you’re looking for a better quality of life — from education, to the outdoors, to beautiful weather — check out Volusia County. We’re open for business. Tonight’s election is not the end. It can be the beginning of a new life.”

Chitwood also reached out to police officers and small business owners who feel abandoned under New York’s leftward turn, calling Volusia “a safe, growing community” where “law enforcement is appreciated and supported by elected officials.”

New York Elects a Socialist — and Florida Reacts

Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old progressive state assemblyman and proud democratic socialist, was elected as New York City’s 111th mayor, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a three-way race with historic turnout.

In his victory speech, Mamdani declared, “New York, tonight you have delivered. A mandate for change. A mandate for a city we can afford.”
But to many, that “change” sounds like higher taxes, softer policing, and more government control — the same recipe that has pushed thousands to relocate to Florida in recent years.

DeSantis and Trump Sound the Alarm

Even before Election Day, Governor Ron DeSantis predicted that a Mamdani victory would send “another wave of hardworking New Yorkers south,” joking that it might be “great for the GOP, but bad for New York City.”

Former President Donald Trump didn’t mince words either. Speaking at the America Business Forum, Trump said Miami could soon become “a refuge for those fleeing communism in New York City.”
He’s repeatedly labeled Mamdani a “communist,” and warned that he would provide “the very minimum” in federal funds to New York under such leadership.

“It can only get worse with a communist at the helm,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I don’t want to send good money after bad.”

Still, Trump added that he hopes New York succeeds — though many conservatives say that seems unlikely under a mayor who proudly embraces socialist politics.

Florida: The New Land of Opportunity

For Chitwood, the message is clear: Florida represents what New York no longer does — freedom, safety, and opportunity.

Volusia County, located just north of Orlando and a short drive from Daytona Beach, has become a destination for families, small businesses, and police officers seeking lower taxes, affordable living, and political sanity.

“Here, law enforcement is respected, not vilified,” Chitwood wrote. “It’s a fantastic place to raise a family.”

As New York City heads into uncharted territory under Mamdani’s socialist leadership, the Sunshine State’s message to frustrated residents is simple:
If you want freedom — Florida is open for you.
