Former Florida Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum was arrested in Alabama last week on multiple drug-related charges, according to Baldwin County jail records.

Gillum’s arrest comes as Florida’s political landscape continues to evolve ahead of the 2026 election. Readers can follow statewide races and campaign developments in Florida Elections 2026.

Gillum, 46, was arrested Thursday night in Daphne, Alabama, and booked into the Baldwin County Jail on charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to online jail records.

Gillum was later released from custody. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Authorities have not publicly released details explaining the circumstances that led to Gillum’s arrest. The Daphne Police Department has not yet released the arrest report.

Gillum, who narrowly lost Florida’s 2018 gubernatorial election to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, served as mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 to 2018 before launching his statewide campaign.

The arrest marks Gillum’s latest legal controversy following several high-profile incidents over the past six years.

In March 2020, Miami Beach police responded to a room at the Mondrian South Beach Hotel where Gillum and two other men were found after a reported medical emergency. Officers recovered suspected methamphetamine from the hotel room, but prosecutors did not file criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence linking Gillum to the drugs.

Gillum later acknowledged he had consumed alcohol during the evening but denied using methamphetamine.

In 2023, Gillum was acquitted on charges of making false statements to the FBI in a federal public corruption case involving campaign finance allegations.

As of Tuesday morning, Gillum had not publicly commented on his latest arrest.

The Florida Pundit will update this story if the Daphne Police Department releases additional information about the arrest or if Gillum issues a public statement.
