ABC News first reported Tuesday that the federal investigation is focused, at least in part, on Mills’ finances, citing sources familiar with the matter. Neither the Justice Department nor the FBI has publicly confirmed the existence of the investigation, and no criminal charges have been announced.
NBC News, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported that the Justice Department’s criminal investigation is examining allegations related to Rep. Cory Mills’ personal and campaign finances. The report also noted that federal investigators have issued subpoenas to at least one witness. Neither the Justice Department nor the FBI has publicly confirmed the investigation, and no criminal charges have been filed against Mills.
A federal investigation does not by itself indicate that criminal charges will be filed, and authorities have not publicly described the full scope of the inquiry. Mills has not been charged with a crime in connection with the reported investigation.
The reported DOJ investigation comes while Mills remains under scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee, which earlier this year announced it was examining allegations involving campaign finance compliance, financial disclosures, acceptance of improper gifts, misuse of congressional resources, and sexual misconduct. Mills has denied wrongdoing and has publicly disputed the allegations.
