Governor DeSantis: “Florida will not be a sanctuary state”

Governor Ron De Santis went to the state Congress for the first time, after having taken office last January, and assured that “Florida will not be a sanctuary state” for undocumented immigrants, or “illegals” as he called them. , ” This is just the beginning”.

And he said more: “We will not allow someone who is here illegally to commit a criminal offense and we will not tolerate sanctuary cities to frustrate the work of police forces by protecting illegal criminals at the expense of public expenditures.”

In fact, one of the laws proposed by the state Congress is to institutionalize the anti-sanctuary concept, which would force the local police bodies to inform Immigration (ICE) about detainees who do not have documentation accrediting them as legal residents.

To conclude, the Republican governor reminded lawmakers that they have a lot of work to do in just 60 days and he urged them to “fight for good and meet Floridians” so they can maintain faith in the state government.

At the end of the governor’s speech, the president of the Florida Democratic Party, Terrie Rizzo, addressed the issue of immigration and criticized DeSantis for following in the footsteps of the White House.

“That harmful policy harasses, discriminates and criminalizes immigrants in our state,” said the Democratic leader.

“Florida does not have sanctuary cities and that attitude is only part of a xenophobic political agenda,” he said.

Then he added: “Democrats defend the rights of immigrants, security for all Floridians and fight because division and hatred are not part of life in our state.”
