Florida Senate agrees with Gov. DeSantis, votes to remove Broward Sheriff Scott Israel

The Florida Senate on Wednesday voted to maintain the decision of Governor Ron DeSantis to permanently suspend Scott Israel, the Broward County Sheriff, for his performance on February 14, 2018, at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Massacre in Parkland, in which 17 people died.

The vote of 25 in favor of maintaining the suspension and 15 against, disagrees with the decision of the special investigator assigned to the case, who recommended last month to reinstate him in his post.

Governor DeSantis suspended Israel in January, citing that the sheriff acted negligently and incompetently during two mass shootings, that of the Fort Lauderdale airport on January 2017 and the one at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Governor DeSantis fulfilled his campaign promise. On January 11, he announced the sheriff’s suspension for “incompetence” as head of the county police, for having repeatedly failed and for demonstrating a poor leadership pattern.

The parents of Parkland victims applauded the governor’s decision at the time.
