DeSantis Unveils New SunPass Savings Program

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Thursday in Orlando a toll reduction of at least 20% for drivers who regularly use the Florida Turnpike, I-95, I-75, and the Sawgrass Expressway, among other interstate routes.

“With regard to the Florida Turnpike, as governor, I have the authority to provide immediate relief for motorists based on the surplus generated,” the governor said, announcing the measure that will take effect on September 1 and will last until March.

The Sun Pass Savings Program will also benefit drivers using the I-95, I-75, I-595, and Palmetto Expressway, highways managed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

According to the announcement, drivers who complete 40 transactions per month will receive a 20% discount on their SunPass bill. Those who have more than 80 toll transactions will receive a 25% credit.

DeSantis hopes that when the Florida Legislature meets in March of next year, it will pass similar permanent toll relief legislation. The governor also stated that he is working on the largest tax relief package in the state’s history.

Florida drivers are not required to sign up for these discounts. All that is required is that your Sun Pass account is in good standing. They will begin to see a credit on their bills in October when the September bill is due.

According to the governor, the measure could benefit 400,000 Floridians, resulting in a savings of $40 million.

This agreement excludes highways owned by the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, such as State Road 836. The governor also urged the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority to take similar measures until the Florida Legislature convenes in March.
