DeSantis Signs $117.6 Billion Budget, Vetoes Nearly $800 Million

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Florida’s $117.6 billion budget Monday after using his line-item veto authority to cut nearly $800 million in spending. The largest vetoes affected corrections infrastructure, a proposed prison hospital and several local projects, while preserving funding for public health programs, artificial intelligence initiatives and education.

With the budget now finalized ahead of the July 1 fiscal year, attention turns to how the spending plan will be implemented—and how it could shape the 2026 gubernatorial race.

Prison Funding Cuts Raise New Questions

DeSantis vetoed more than $135 million for prison infrastructure, including funding for a proposed prison hospital. The move comes despite previous state assessments warning that Florida’s prison system requires billions of dollars in long-term repairs and modernization.

Expect lawmakers to revisit the issue during the next Legislative Session.
