MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Veteran Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson announced Friday that she will not seek another term in the U.S. House of Representatives, bringing an end to a political career that spanned decades in education, local government, the Florida Legislature, and Congress.
Wilson made the announcement during a street-naming ceremony held in her honor near the elementary school where she once served as principal. Addressing supporters and community leaders, the longtime lawmaker said the moment marked a natural conclusion to her public service journey.
The decision immediately sets off what is expected to become one of South Florida’s most closely watched congressional races ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Representing portions of Miami-Dade and Broward counties since 2011, Wilson built a reputation as an outspoken advocate for public education, minority communities, and youth mentorship programs.
