Byron Donalds Says Black Voters Are Moving Toward GOP Ahead of Florida Governor’s Race

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds says he believes Florida’s Black voters are becoming increasingly open to Republican candidates, arguing that issues such as education, health care, insurance costs, and economic opportunity are driving new political conversations across the state.

During a recent interview with conservative commentator Officer Tatum, Donalds pointed to growing support from Black and independent voters as he campaigns for the Republican nomination in Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial race.

“We’ve actually been seeing a lot of love out there,” Donalds said, describing interactions with voters who may not traditionally identify as Republicans but are paying closer attention to his campaign.

Donalds, who currently represents Southwest Florida in Congress, could become Florida’s first Black governor if he wins both the Republican nomination and the general election.

A Historic Campaign

While Donalds acknowledged the historical significance of his candidacy, he emphasized that voters are focused more on policy than symbolism.

According to Donalds, conversations on the campaign trail frequently center on affordability, insurance costs, education, health care, and economic issues affecting families across Florida.

The congressman argued that voters are responding to what he described as a consistent conservative message rather than campaign rhetoric designed solely for election season.

“People are respecting more and more that I haven’t watered down conservatism,” Donalds said during the interview.

Republicans Targeting New Voters

Florida Republicans have expanded their voter registration advantage in recent years while making gains among Hispanic, working-class, and minority voters throughout the state.

Political analysts have noted that changing voter coalitions helped fuel recent Republican victories in Florida, transforming what was once considered one of the nation’s premier swing states into a state that has increasingly favored Republican candidates.

Donalds believes that trend can continue if Republicans remain focused on issues that directly affect everyday life.

Supporters argue that concerns about inflation, housing affordability, public safety, and education have created opportunities for Republican candidates to connect with voters who may have historically supported Democrats.

Governor’s Race Continues to Take Shape

The Republican primary remains one of the most closely watched races in Florida politics.

Several candidates are competing to succeed term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis, with Donalds positioning himself as a conservative outsider focused on continuing many of the policies that have helped Florida attract businesses and new residents.

The campaign has also drawn national attention because of Donalds’ growing profile within the Republican Party and his ability to generate support among both grassroots activists and conservative media audiences.

Why It Matters

The question of whether Republicans can continue expanding support among Black voters could play a significant role in future Florida elections.

For Donalds, success will depend not only on making history but on convincing voters that conservative policies offer solutions to issues affecting their daily lives.

As the governor’s race accelerates, both parties will be watching closely to see whether Florida’s political coalitions continue shifting—or whether traditional voting patterns reassert themselves.

One thing is clear: Byron Donalds believes the Republican Party’s future growth depends on reaching voters far beyond its traditional base.
