Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced on Monday that she has filed articles of impeachment against Attorney General Merrick Garland, who personally authorized an FBI search of former President Donald Trump at his Mar-A-Largo home in Florida.
Greene, R-Ga., an ardent Trump supporter who has backed the ex-unfounded president’s claim that he lost the 2020 presidential election due to widespread voter fraud, said Garland had failed to demonstrate impartiality in his job as the country’s top law enforcement officer as a result of the investigation.
Green also claimed the investigation proved Garland, a former Supreme Court nominee, was “unfit” to be Attorney General.
“By his actions, Attorney General Garland has demonstrated that he will continue to be a threat to the United States justice system.”
“Attorney General Garland, by such conduct, has demonstrated that if allowed to remain in office, he will continue to be a threat to the justice system of the United States of America, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with democracy, self-governance, and the rule of law,” Greene’s articles stated.
The search warrant for Trump’s south Florida home was approved by a federal judge.
The warrant, which was made public on Friday, revealed that the FBI secured classified materials taken to Mar-a-Lago and suggests that the former president is being investigated for possible violations of the Espionage Act.
Greene and many of her Republican colleagues have accused the Justice Department of targeting Trump for political reasons, with many expecting him to run for President again in 2024 against President Joe Biden.
In a statement issued on Friday, Trump spokesperson Taylor Budowich called the search “outrageous,” describing it as a “botched raid in which they seized the president’s picture books, a ‘handwritten note,’ and declassified documents.”
Of course, Biden and the White House claimed they were unaware of the FBI investigation. As long as Democrats control the House, the articles will face an uphill battle.
