Shevrin Jones Launches Bid to Succeed Frederica Wilson in Congress

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Florida Sen. Shevrin Jones announced Thursday that he is running for Congress, becoming the highest-profile candidate so far seeking to succeed longtime U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson should the veteran Democrat leave her seat.

Jones, a Democrat from Miami Gardens, has emerged as one of the most recognizable Democratic voices in the Florida Legislature and is expected to begin the race with significant name recognition and fundraising advantages.

The announcement comes amid growing speculation that Wilson, who has represented portions of Miami-Dade and Broward counties in Congress since 2011, may not seek reelection.

A Rising Figure in Florida Democratic Politics

Jones has served in the Florida Senate since 2020 after previously serving in the Florida House of Representatives. Throughout his legislative career, he has focused on education, economic opportunity, healthcare access, and voting rights.

Supporters view Jones as one of the Democratic Party’s most visible leaders in South Florida, while critics argue that Democrats face an increasingly difficult political environment statewide despite maintaining strong support in portions of Miami-Dade County.

If elected, Jones would bring years of legislative experience and an established political network to Congress.

Race Could Shape Future Democratic Leadership

Wilson’s congressional district remains heavily Democratic, meaning the primary election could effectively determine the next member of Congress.

Political observers expect additional candidates to enter the race as qualifying approaches, potentially setting up a competitive Democratic primary.

The seat represents one of the most influential Democratic strongholds in Florida and has historically served as a launching pad for future political leaders.

Democrats Seek Momentum Ahead of 2026

Jones enters the race as Florida Democrats continue searching for opportunities to rebuild statewide influence after several election cycles dominated by Republicans.

While Democrats remain competitive in urban areas and parts of South Florida, Republicans have expanded voter registration advantages across much of the state.

A congressional victory would not change the balance of power in Washington significantly, but the race could help shape the next generation of Democratic leadership in Florida.

Why It Matters

The contest to succeed Frederica Wilson is expected to attract significant attention from Democratic activists, donors, and elected officials throughout South Florida.

With Wilson’s eventual successor likely to hold the seat for years to come, the race may become one of the most important Democratic primaries in Florida during the 2026 election cycle.
