Paul Renner Officially Qualifies for Florida Governor’s Race

Former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner has officially qualified to appear on the ballot in the Republican Primary for Governor, becoming one of a growing field of candidates seeking to succeed Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Renner’s campaign announced Tuesday that he had completed the qualification process for the Aug. 18, 2026 Republican Primary.

“Now, the sprint to the Primary Election officially begins,” the campaign said in a statement.

The Palm Coast Republican has built his campaign around several key issues, including eliminating property taxes, strengthening border security, blocking the construction of artificial intelligence data centers in Florida, and combating government corruption.

“The Wall Street Liberals and Hollywood Elites love to bring their money to Florida because we’ve created the most free and prosperous economy in the world,” Renner said. “Only a tough Governor can stop them from changing our state to look more like the New York or California from which they came. I’ll be that Governor.”

A Navy veteran and attorney, Renner’s political career began in 2014 when he narrowly lost a Republican primary for the Florida House by just two votes. He returned the following year, winning a special election in a neighboring district and eventually serving nine years in the Legislature.

Renner rose through House leadership ranks before serving as Speaker of the Florida House from 2022 through 2024, where he helped advance conservative priorities on education, public safety, immigration, and fiscal policy.

His entry into the qualified field adds another prominent Republican to an already crowded gubernatorial contest.

As of Tuesday evening, eleven other candidates had qualified, including U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds and investor James Fishback. Candidates have until noon Friday to complete the qualification process.

Renner qualified by paying the required $8,484 filing fee rather than collecting petition signatures.

Despite his legislative résumé, Renner faces an uphill battle in the Republican Primary. Recent polling continues to show Donalds holding a commanding lead after receiving President Donald Trump’s endorsement in early 2025.

Renner has argued that grassroots Republican activists remain open to alternatives and has pointed to several conservative straw polls that have shown stronger support for his campaign than traditional polling suggests.

He has also questioned Donalds’ electability and warned Republicans against taking the Governor’s race for granted in November.

On the Democratic side, former Congressman David Jolly has emerged as the party’s presumptive nominee following Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings’ decision to suspend his campaign while undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

While some surveys have shown a competitive general election environment, most national election analysts continue to rate Florida as a Republican-leaning state heading into 2026.

Why It Matters

Renner’s qualification officially places one of Florida’s most experienced conservative lawmakers on the ballot. As a former House Speaker, Navy veteran, and longtime Republican leader, his candidacy adds another high-profile name to a gubernatorial race that is rapidly becoming one of the most closely watched contests in the nation.
