The political dispute surrounding anonymous social media accounts in Florida’s Republican gubernatorial primary intensified Monday after Layla Collins, the wife of Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, released phone records that she says refute allegations tying her to anonymous X accounts critical of Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The controversy—dubbed “Burnergate” by political observers—centers on claims made by allies of DeSantis that Layla Collins operated or was connected to anonymous social media accounts used to criticize the governor during the increasingly competitive Republican race for governor. Those allegations have not been independently verified.

According to the Collins campaign, the newly released phone records contradict claims involving a phone number that critics alleged was linked to one of the anonymous accounts. Campaign officials argue the records undermine the accusations and demonstrate that the allegations are unfounded.

A spokesperson for the Collins campaign also criticized recent media coverage, arguing that reports amplified unverified accusations without sufficient evidence. The campaign has continued to deny any connection between Layla Collins and the anonymous accounts.

Political tensions rise in GOP primary

The dispute comes as Florida Republicans prepare for a closely watched gubernatorial primary to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis.

While policy issues such as taxes, immigration, education, and economic growth have dominated much of the campaign, the anonymous account controversy has injected a more personal dispute into the race.

Supporters of the Collins campaign contend the accusations are politically motivated, while critics continue to question the campaign about the anonymous online activity. As of Monday, no public evidence had been presented independently confirming Layla Collins operated the accounts in question.

Campaign remains focused on election

Despite the controversy, Jay Collins has continued campaigning across Florida, emphasizing conservative priorities and his record serving as lieutenant governor.

The campaign has indicated it considers the matter addressed through the release of the phone records and continues to reject the allegations.

Whether the controversy has any lasting impact on the Republican primary remains to be seen as candidates continue competing for support ahead of the 2026 election.
