In a stunning political reversal, New York Attorney General Letitia James — who famously led the civil fraud case against President Donald Trump — has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia on multiple counts of bank and mortgage fraud.
The 66-year-old Democrat, long hailed by her party as a symbol of “accountability” and “no one above the law,” now finds herself accused of making false statements on loan documents related to a property she purchased for her niece in Norfolk, Virginia. The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan for the Eastern District of Virginia, alleges James misrepresented the property as a primary residence to secure better loan terms.
If convicted, James could face up to 30 years in prison and $1 million in fines per count.
“This case represents intentional criminal acts and serious breaches of public trust,” Halligan said Thursday.
The irony wasn’t lost on conservatives. Representative Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) called the charges “poetic justice,” accusing James of weaponizing her office to attack Trump while engaging in the same kind of financial deception she once condemned.
“Her hypocrisy is profound,” Stefanik said. “For years she preached that no one is above the law — now she’s finding out what that means.”
Democrats, however, immediately circled the wagons. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer labeled the indictment “revenge politics,” while New York Governor Kathy Hochul accused the Trump administration of “weaponizing the Justice Department.”
But critics say the left’s outrage rings hollow. For years, Democrats have cheered politically convenient prosecutions — from Trump’s business empire to his associates — only to cry foul when the tables turn.
Now, the prosecutor who promised to bring Trump to justice may soon be fighting for her own freedom in a federal courtroom.
