US military to build 6 tent cities near border for undocumented migrants

The US military will build six tent cities near the border so that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) can accommodate 7,500 undocumented migrants and their families who are detained in those areas.

Patrick Shanahan, Acting Secretary of Defense, is expected to sign his approval for the request for tents cities that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) made to the Pentagon, according to the NBC News.

Surely the tents will not be erected within the military bases, and once they are built, ICE will take over the detention of the immigrants and their custody.

Last year, the government hosted dozens of migrant children in a tent camp in Tornillo, Texas that cost more than $ 750 per day per bed.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Department of Defense (DOD) said DHS made the “Request for Assistance (RFA)” on May 9.

“Following discussions with DHS on the details of the RFA, DHS agreed to request the DOD to lend and build DOD tents to support ICE, and to provide support to ICE for the comprehensive services for which ICE will reimburse to DOD, “said Major Chris Mitchell.

“The DOD will not provide detention or custody support for foreigners detained in these ICE detention centers,” he added.
