Apple Moves Mac Pro Production from the US to China

Apple Inc is moving the manufacturing of its new Mac Pro computer from the United States to China, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the decision.

The information comes to light in the midst of a fierce trade war between China and the US, which has already affected not only the commercial ties of the first two economic powers in the world, but has also been met with accusations and mutual threats.

The transfer comes at a time when the government of President Donald Trump increased to 25% the tariffs on Chinese products worth 200,000 million dollars and threatened with additional taxes on goods of the Asian country valued at 300,000 million dollars.

The US technology giant has teamed up with Quanta Computer Inc to make the computer, which will cost $ 6,000, and is increasing production at a factory near Shanghai, the report said.

“Like all our products, the new Mac Pro is designed and manufactured in California and includes components from many countries, including the United States,” said an Apple spokesman. “The final assembly is only part of the manufacturing process.”

Last week, Apple asked its main suppliers to evaluate the cost implications of moving 15% to 30% of its production capacity from China to Southeast Asia, as it prepares for a restructuring of its supply chain, according to a report. of Nikkei Asian Review.

China is a key market for Apple, as well as a large production center for its devices. About 18% of the company’s total revenues came from China in the quarter ended in March.

The company’s shares fell 1.1% at 14:13 GMT, to settle its level at 197.45 dollars.
