President Donald Trump is interested in buying Greenland, one of his advisors confirmed on Sunday, although the semi-autonomous region has made it clear that it is not for sale.
Trump “wants to explore the idea” of buying the territory from Denmark, said White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow.
The advisor refused to predict what will happen to the idea, but in statements to the “Fox News Sunday” program he said that the territory, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean, “is a strategic place” “with many mineral resources”
As fanciful as the matter may seem, it is not the first time that a US president tries to buy Greenland. Harry Truman already did it, who offered in 1946 100 million dollars to Denmark. However, the offer was rejected.
The US military already has an important air base in Greenland, in the northwest of the island. The base has 600 employees and is important in the country’s global radar system.
President Trump is scheduled to travel to Denmark in September, although it has not transcended whether this issue will be on the agenda or not.
