Group of students suspended in Arizona for wearing “MAGA” gear

A group of students from Perry High School, located in Gilbert, Arizona, was suspended for ten days because they were wearing “Make America Great Again” gear, local media reported today.

The suspension of the students occurred on Friday, designated as “Spirit Week” at the high school and it was nicknamed “Party in the USA Day.”, day in which students can leave home the school uniform and wear any clothes they will like, which motivated the complaints of parents, who criticized the school authorities for violating the freedom of expression of their children.

Jennifer Farris, mother of one of the students suspended, told the fact in their social networks where she wrote that her daughter and other students arrived wearing T-shirts and caps with the motto Make America Great Again (MAGA), a trade mark famous by president Donald Trump.

Some of the parents told the Arizona Republic newspaper, the first to report the incident, that the setbacks began at lunchtime when school administrators began asking students to take off their MAGA T-shirts and hats or keep their US flags.

In the afternoon, shortly before the time of departure, the young people gathered to take pictures in groups and it was when the school police officers began taking pictures of the students and asking for their names.

The students refused and were sent to the Administration office, where they repeated the request to remove their hats and sweaters, which the young people refused again, which led to the suspension.

Terry Locke, spokesman for the school district, confirmed the suspension of the students to the newspaper, without indicating the reasons, although he assured that it was not related to the clothing they were wearing.

Several parents prepare a protest Monday afternoon on the outskirts of the school.
