HARDEE COUNTY, Fla. — U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds is trying to keep the conversation focused on Florida, not future presidential ambitions.
While campaigning this week, the Naples Republican was asked once again about his long-term political future and whether a successful run for Governor could eventually lead to a White House campaign.
Donalds made clear he is not thinking about that now.
“Right now, I’m focused on being Governor of Florida. I don’t believe in planning politics. I never have,” Donalds told supporters during a campaign stop in Hardee County.
“I think you worry about the thing in front of you, and you do that job.”
The congressman went even further, suggesting he is ready to leave Washington behind altogether.
“To be honest, I really don’t have any interest in going back to Washington, D.C. Been there long enough. I’m ready to come home. And this state is home to me,” Donalds said.
A Different Tone From Earlier Comments
The comments come just weeks after Donalds offered a more open-ended response when discussing future political opportunities during an appearance on the “HotCakes & Hot Takes” podcast.
At the time, he described politics as a timing business and suggested future decisions often depend on circumstances and opportunity.
“Politics is a timing business. If the timing works out for you, you do it. If the timing is not in your favor, you should have enough awareness and situational awareness and self-awareness, and hopefully you’ve got people around you who will say, ‘No, you should not do this,'” Donalds said.
Despite those remarks, Donalds now appears focused on projecting a message centered entirely on Florida and his gubernatorial campaign.
Following a Different Path
Florida has a long history of governors who later pursued national office.
Former Governors Reubin Askew, Bob Graham, Jeb Bush, and Ron DeSantis all either sought the presidency or seriously explored White House bids after serving in Tallahassee.
For now, Donalds is distancing himself from that conversation.
The congressman has spent recent months campaigning across Florida while emphasizing issues such as economic growth, education, public safety, and tax relief.
His campaign has also benefited from strong support among Republican voters and endorsements from prominent conservative leaders.

Donalds remains the clear Republican front-runner in Florida’s governor’s race and continues to draw national attention from conservative activists and political observers who view him as a rising figure within the GOP.
